NGOs call for probe into teen activist’s extra-judicial slaying

Some 20 representatives of non-governmental organisations on Friday urged the National Human Right Commission (NHRC) to launch a probe into the shooting death of prominent Lahu activist Chaiyapoom Pasae at an Army checkpoint.

The 17-year-old was killed by soldiers in Chiang Mai’s Chiang Dao district last Friday.
The NGO representatives – including from the Cross Cultural Foundation – handed a petition to NHRC member Angkhana Neelapaijit at the agency’s head office on Chaeng Wattana Road in Bangkok.
They also called for the NHRC to implement proactive measures to end violence against and harassment of human right advocates, their family members, related witnesses and others involved in such cases.
Security officers said the extra-judicial killing of Chaiyapoom was an act of self-defence and was unavoidable.
They described him as a suspected armed and illicit drug trafficker.
