The temperature at the crest of Thailand’s highest mountain at 6am was 9 degrees Celsius, even as it began soaring to 40 degrees elsewhere in the country.
The 9C measurement was taken at the Kiew Maepan viewpoint on top of the mountain, Doi Inthanon National Park director Rung Hiranwong said.
He said the mountain draws many tourists every day even in summertime. Its peak often sees a dusting of frost on winter mornings, drawing hordes of sightseers.
The Meteorological Department forecast that the temperature in Bangkok and across the Central Region on Tuesday would reach 38 degrees. It was expected to hit 40C in the North, 39C in the Northeast and East and 37C in the South.
