Prawit back at work, denies absence was due to health reasons

After days of absence, Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister General Prawit Wongsuwan was back at work yesterday but did not return to the Defence Ministry.

Instead, he chaired a meeting of Five Provinces Bordering Forest Preservation Foundation located in the 1st Infantry Regiment.
“What’s so strange about me being absent?” Prawit said in a telephone chat, stressing that he was not sick and was not admitted to any hospital. He refused to talk about speculations over the reasons for his absence, saying, “I’ll let them think whatever they want.”
The 71-year-old retired general has not been seen in public since Monday, the day of the bombing at the Phramongkutklao Hospital room named after him. Though he was not seen in public, his security adviser Panitan Wattanayagorn said the minister did order tighter security in public areas.
“I haven’t concluded yet who did it,” Prawit said. “There’s no one but ‘some people’ near us,” he said.
Regarding the current flooding in Bangkok following heavy rains on Wednesday night, he said he had ordered military officers to drain the remaining floodwater from main roads to help tackle traffic congestion.
