‘Poor man’s skywalk’ at Loei draws tourists

Tourists began visiting the so-called “poor man’s skywalk” on top of a mountain in Loei’s Pak Chom district on Saturday morning to enjoy watching the sea of mist over the Mekong River down below.

Suranan Sareepim, head of Ban Pak Chom village, said tourists came to see a panoramic view of fog covering the Thai and Lao banks of the Mekong.
On Saturday, temperatures dropped to between 9 and 13 degrees Celsius in the district, with fog covering the mountaintops.
Suranan said the site used to be a corn plantation but its owner gave it up for the village to develop as a tourist destination. The mountain was called Phu Lamduan after the plantation’s owner.
Suranan said the local villagers did not have a large budget, so they solicited used planks and logs from across the district to build wood bridges linking the walkways overlooking the cliff. It thus became known as the “poor man’s skywalk”.
He said there are four wooden platforms where tourists could take photos and enjoy the spectacular views.
The mountaintop is about 3 kilometres from downtown Pak Chom district. There is a parking ground at the foot of the mountain, and tourists can pay Bt50 each to be driven to the viewing area in villagers’ farm trucks.
