33 villages in Surat Thani hit by flash floods

A total of 33 villages in Surat Thani's Don Sak district were hit by floods caused by mountain run-offs late on Tuesday night.

The affected villages were in Tambon Chaiyakram, Tambon Don Sak and Tambon Chonlakram in Don Sak district.
The flash floods hit about midnight and by early Wednesday, the Ban Nai-Don Sak road was under about 50 centimetres of water for about two kilometres.
Troops from the 45th Army Circle rushed to help evacuate 21 families of Ban Na Nua village in Tambon Don Sak to a temporary shelter in Wat Na Ta Dee prepared by the district office.
Among the evacuees was Somboon Miyakij, 86, who was so ill that she could not get up from her bed. She said her house has never been hit by such high floods and it was lucky for her that the troops had come to evacuate her in time.
Sanon Yusathit, 34, his wife, and two children also had to stay at the shelter after their house was damaged by run-off.
The water flowed down the mountain ranges on the west side of Kanchanadit district and the mountains that straddle Surat Thani and Nakhon Si Thammarat's Khanom district following hours of heavy downpours.
