SSO expands coverage for stem-cell treatments

The Social Security Office (SSO) has expanded its insured person’s health coverage to include more stem-cell treatments at eight hospitals nationwide.

The SSO now supports allogeneic stem-cell transplants from unrelated donors via the Thai Red Cross Society. Previously it covered only autologous transplants (those of patients’ own cells) or allogeneic treatments from related donors, such as siblings, according to SSO secretary-general Suradech Waleeithikul.
Besides extending the age of patients eligible for stem-cell implants to 65, up from 60, the SSO also increased the medical bill coverage for stem-cell treatment from the previous rate of Bt750,000 to Bt1.3 million.
Myelofibrosis has been added to the list of conditions that entitle a patient to stem-cell treatment. The existing diseases on the list are chronic myeloid leukemia, acute myeloid leukemia, acute lymphoblastic leukemia, malignant lymphoma, severe aplastic anemia, myelodysplastic syndrome, and multiple myeloma.
The stem cell implant treatments are available for SSO-insured persons at Bangkok’s Chulalongkorn Hospital, Ramathibodi Hospital, Siriraj Hospital and Phra Mongkutklao Hospital as well as Songkhla’s Songklanagarind Hospital, Khon Kaen’s Srinagarind Hospital, Chiang Mai’s Maharat Nakhon Chiang Mai Hospital, and Phitsanulok’s Naresuan University Hospital
