Drug suspects arrested with 3 million yaba pills

Police arrested two suspects along with three million yaba pills in Chiang Rai’s Mae Lao district very early on Sunday.

Provincial Police Region 5 chief Pol Lt-General Pulsap Prasertsak said that Phichit natives Amnat Chakjung, 27, and Anyakan Chonnabot, 26, were arrested at 12.10am at a checkpoint on Ban Huai San Plubpla-Ban Nong Huad in Tambon Jom Mokkaew.

The suspects, who were allegedly carrying sacks of yaba pills in their pick-up truck, reportedly confessed that they were hired by a man known only by his nickname, “Noom”. Their job was to collect the pills from a roadside location in Chiang Rai’s Mae Suay district and store them at their place pending further distribution.
Pulsap said the drugs belonged to a Phichit-based drug gang known as Man Took Med, which translates as “Crunchy Nuts” and was borrowed from advertisements for a peanut snack food.
The gang is allegedly led by Pannawit Prathum, a drug suspect who fled to a neighbouring country but is believed to give instructions for the illicit trade by phone.
Police apprehended four other suspected members of the gang last month and would soon be asking authorities in the neighbouring country to arrest and extradite Pannawit, Pulsap added.
