Only about 5-6 international flights are expected to be affected.
The runway’s damage is located at the points where planes make a U-turn immediately prior to taking off or after having landed, said airport director Attaporn Nuang-Udom.
The cracks were caused by the airport’s high volume of flights and the skidding of tyres as the planes turn the bends of the asphaltic concrete. The stress at the locations occurs about 100 times daily from both international and domestic traffic.
Two spots need to be repaired – runways 32 and 14 -– at opposite ends of the single main runway. Each damaged zone has 5-metre crack and surface damage.
The entire 3,000 metre runway will receive general maintenance at the same time as the repairs are made. Airlines with affected flights have already been informed of the process.
