Man drowns in Samut Sakhon, puppy waits on canal bank

A puppy was seen waiting for its owner by a canal in Samut Sakhon province's Krathum Ban district 24 hours after the man had drowned.

Krathum Ban rescuers and district police were told of the accident at 9pm on Sunday and when they arrived they found a pair of sandals near a wooden bench under a mango tree on the canal bank on Soi Suan Luang 24 in Moo 1 village, Tambon Suan Luang.
The puppy was sitting next to the sandals, still waiting for the man to return.
Scuba divers from the Si Samut rescue unit took about 10 minutes to find the body, just three metres away from the wooden bench. The man was identified as Somchai Phusuwan, 48.
A doctor determined he had been dead for 24 hours.
Neighbours said he had not been seen since Saturday night and had not turned up to help in a friend’s monk ordainment ceremony as promised, so several people had gone to check his house.
They found his sandals and puppy by the canal and concluded he had fallen into the water and drowned.
They said the man liked to drink in the evenings and would often sit on the bench to phone his wife, who worked in another province.
