Former Special-Branch officer faces 8 warrants for extortion

The Criminal Court has approved eight arrest warrants for a former deputy superintendent at the Special-Branch Police Division, Pol Lt-Colonel Santhana Prayoonrat, over allegations of extortion at the Donmuang Modern Market.

Tourist Police deputy commander Pol Maj-General Surachet Hakpan said on Friday that 10 of Santhana’s alleged accomplices also faced arrest warrants.
“We are taking actions against a gang that allegedly extorted money from vendors at the market on various occasions,” he said.
Surachet said extortion was an offence under the anti-money laundering law.
“We have already interviewed more than 200 vendors,” he said.
Santhana is an advisor to the operator of Donmuang Modern Market in Bangkok’s Don Muang district.
Earlier this month, Santhana confronted a senior police officer as he led a team to scour the market on suspicion that some shops have sold substandard products.
