Phayao villages hit by flash flood after river bursts banks

Two Phayao villages were hit by a flash flood early on Saturday after the Mao Lao River burst its banks following overnight heavy downpours.

Local residents of Ban Lar and Ban Chaiyaprom villages in Tambon Wieng of Chiang Kham district said the water arrived at about 4am and quickly rose.
Main roads in the two villages were underwater by 30 to 50 centimetres.
A one-kilometre-long road in front of Ban Chaiyaprom School was under about 30cm of water, but vehicles could still pass through the road section at 7.30am.
Restaurant owner Duangpornruedee Kongmongkol said her worker woke up to see the rising water at 4am, but it was already too late for them to move valuables upstairs.
A local resident, Boonyapat Srikham, said there were heavy rains throughout the night, causing the Mae Lao River to burst its banks to flood the two villages.
Chiang Kham district chief Jaran Kanchanapanyanon said he would urgently dispatch officials to help the affected villagers.
