Taiwan said Saturday that a historic agreement between China and the Vatican would not result in Taipei losing its only diplomatic ally in Europe.

The foreign ministry added that it hoped the new deal would pave the way for religious freedoms in China, but said it hoped the Holy See would also make sure Catholics on the mainland "receive due protection and not be subject to repression".
