Six injured in explosion as fireworks being made

An explosion that injured six people at the Mae Hong Son temple on Wednesday night may have been caused by flash powder being pounded into fireworks for the Bung Fai festival.

The blast occurred at 8pm at Wat Sob Soi in Tambon Pang Moo in Muang district.

The injured were two monks – identified as Phra Chakkapan Mankhong, 29, and Phra Unthit Mankhong, 55 - and four laymen: Akira Jaisuk, 17, Pitak Mingkwanchroenchit, 25, Srisod Tiyawong, 67, and another 22-year-old man identified only by first name Pong.

Police said the men were making the fireworks while the monks were observing them. The explosion took place as the men stuffed flash powder into the rocket.

Mae Hong Son is currently celebrating a festival of sand pagoda offering, locally known as Poy Ja Tee. As part of the celebration, temples submitted Bung Fai rockets for a contest.
