Wild elephant injured by truck on Chon Buri road

A young wild elephant was hit and severely injured by a trailer truck while it was crossing a road with its mother in Chon Buri’s Nong Yai district early Thursday, police said.

Pol Lt Col Rames Netjinda, an inspector with the Nong Yai police station, was alerted of the accident on highway No 344 at 5am.
The impact caused the young elephant to be hurled into the ditch in the central reservation where it was lay helplessly after its legs were apparently injured.
The truck overturned and partially fell into the ditch as well. The driver, Sompong Boonchuay, 54, was injured and rushed to the Nong Yai Hospital.
A van driver, Chatree Srisakul, told police that he was driving in the right lane of the downhill road when he spotted the two elephants crossing. He said he managed to steer his van to avoid the elephants but the trailer truck in the left lane hit the smaller elephant and sent it into the ditch.
Veterinarians have yet to check and treat the injured animals.
