Minister calls on MRT, Airport Rail Link to continue keeping fares low
Transport Minister Saksayam Chidchob has instructed some train operators to consider extending low fares beyond the end of this month.
The Mass Rapid Transport Authority of Thailand (MRTA) and SRT Electrified Train Co Ltd (SRTET), which operates the Airport Rail Link, have been offering lower fares. MRTA reduced fares on its Purple Line (Bangyai-Taopoon) in December, while the Airport Rail Link reduced fares from Phya Thai-Suvarnabhumi Airport since March this year.
Airport Rail Link cut fares during off-peak hours on weekdays for holders of the Smart Pass. Under the new pricing system, trips cost between Bt15-Bt25 from between Bt15 and Bt45. Off-peak hours are from 5.30am to 7am, 10am to 5pm and 8pm to midnight.
The aim was to ease the burden on people.
The minister said both companies should complete their consideration within this month.
SRTET president Suthep Panpeng, meanwhile, said last week that the company had called on the State Railways of Thailand (SRT) to allow it to continue offering low fairs for another three months after the current support expires on June 28. SRT’s board is expected to look into the matter on June 18, he said, adding that he expects the board to say yes.
