People making the most of long weekend, claims Transport Ministry
The Transport Ministry said that more than 4.83 million people used public transport on Wednesday and Thursday (November 18 and 19), before the November 19-22 long weekend began.
The government tagged November 19 and 20 on to the November 21-22 weekend in a bid to boost domestic tourism.
The ministry said the number of people using public transportation on these two days had exceeded its initial estimation by 4.29 per cent.
Meanwhile, 5.8 million vehicles moved in and out of Bangkok on Wednesday and Thursday, or 36.48 per cent higher than expected. Most of these vehicles were personal cars.
Over the two days, 116 road accidents took place claiming 10 lives and injuring 117 others.
According to the report, 85.71 per cent of the accidents were due to speeding, while nine of the deaths were caused by motorcycle accidents, which stood at 35. Meanwhile, public buses were only involved in three accidents.
