Man, 38, becomes first fatality in Thong Lor cluster

A 38-year-old man in Tak province has become the first person to die of Covid-19 spread by the Thong Lor cluster, the province's Public Health Office said on Friday.

According to reports, the patient visited Krystal Club in Bangkok's Thong Lor area on March 19. Krystal Club has been identified as one of the hotspots behind Thailand’s third wave of infections.

The patient, who worked as a programmer, died at Somdej Phrachao Taksin Maharat Hospital in Tak’s Muang district. He was also suffering from high blood pressure, diabetes and obesity, said Public Health Office deputy Ramet Wongvilairat.

"His symptoms improved after he was admitted to hospital on April 4, but then they deteriorated due to high potassium levels in the blood," he said.

On April 1, the patient drove from Bangkok to Chaiyaphum. On April 2, he drove to Tak and visited his wife at Somdej Phrachao Taksin Maharat Hospital.

On April 4, he took a Covid-19 test at Somdej Phrachao Taksin Maharat Hospital after developing a cough, sore throat and muscle pain. He tested positive and was hospitalised the same afternoon.

A total of 20 Covid-19 cases, mostly linked to the Thong Lor cluster, have been discovered in Tak so far. The patients are being treated at the Mae Sot and Somdej Phrachao Taksin Maharat hospitals, said Ramet.
