As the opposition leader, he relentlessly visits flooded areas and flood shelters as if he were still prime minister. Seeing him on TV wading through waist-high water captivated me, especially when the election is almost four years away.
Furthermore, as a veteran politician, he advises and warns rookie PM Yingluck almost daily, as if he were her adviser. He even popped in at the National Flood Relief Centre at Don Mueang Airport to brief Yingluck on how and where to shelter flood victims. Never before has the opposition, especially a Democrat, been so supportive of the government during tough times. I normally see gloating and insult.
Abhisit’s deeds remind me of Thomas Paine’s famous line, “These are the times that try men’s souls.”
