Pornpimol Kanchanalak’s column is spot on. When politicians get elected on promises that they cannot keep without borrowing more than the government can repay, the country will eventually go bankrupt. Greece, Portugal, Spain and now almost Italy have all taken this path. The US is heading down the same path. If things do not change soon, there will no longer be a USA as we know it (both the good and bad).
We as private citizens must eventually balance our spending with our income, or we go bankrupt and/or to jail. Governments are only different in that they can legally print money, which devalues the currency and results in inflation. The real losers are the common people. The rich (politicians, businessmen, bankers) have enough stashed away to weather the crisis and come out on top again. We must elect honest politicians who will do what is right for the country and its people. That is true in Thailand, the USA, or any country. Do not believe the promises that you know they cannot keep. Nothing from the government is “free”.
