Invest in railways for the future

Thailand has been upgrading its railway system.

Old wooden ties have been replaced with concrete, and modern mounting techniques are being employed. This parallels the new railyard being built in Udon. I suspected the work here had to do with one of the Thai-Lao-Chinese dam projects, but now that I see the Chiang Mai line is upgraded, I wonder. What’s missing in the entire system are cross-connecting lines, say from Nong Khai to Chiang Mai. If I wish to visit Chiang Rai I must travel to Bangkok first – extra far and extra difficult.
