Democrats got away with it

MR Sukhumbhand Paribatra's triumph in Sunday's gubernatorial election came about because voters repelled the Democrat Party's rivals - not exactly because they loved the Democrats.
A major change within the party itself is essential. Secretary-general Chalermchai Sri-on should show spirit or be sacked from his post.
Also, party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva should seize this opportunity to open the way for a new choice of party leadership. Abhisit himself might accept the post if re-elected – and thus gain more confidence and power to lead.
Old ways of reviving the party aren’t enough – major surgery is needed.
