More support required for charter change

Re: "Government has more legitimacy than some", Letters, April 8.

Somsak Pola is confusing a ruling party’s power as a government and its right to make changes to the Constitution. A parliament has two main responsibilities: to appoint a government as well as monitor its conduct; and to make laws according to the Constitution’s guidelines.
The Constitution is no ordinary law. How can a party with the support of only one-fourth of the population – as the writer has admitted himself (15 million out of 67 million) – attempt to change the basic law that would affect all the people and future generations, without anybody raising an eyebrow?
By the way, more than 100 draft laws are stuck at Parliament without the Pheu Thai Party – as the leading party in the House – giving them the slightest thought.
