'Orphan' pastries are adopted fast

The second Bangkok branch of Mr Jones' Orphanage is photogenic and fun

The setting and the pastries at Mr Jones’ Orphanage – a bakery-cafe not a home for unfortunate children – are so lovely that the students, tourists and other diners are constantly taking pictures and uploading them to Facebook.
This is the second branch, at Siam Center. The Australian entrepreneur behind it opened the first on Soi Thonglor last year.
The name is meant to suggest a children’s playground, and the decor is indeed playful –wooden tables and blue-cushioned armchairs between a floor with printed tiles and an immense wristwatch made of wood suspended from the ceiling. More than 20 kinds of desserts – homemade cakes, brownies, waffles, crepes, scones, macaroons, toast, cookies, creme brulee and pie – occupy another table in the centre. They’re all freshly made, not too sweet and mixed with fresh fruit.

It’s teatime, so I try the Red Velvet Cake and Chocky Mud Pie served with vanilla ice cream. The Kit Kat Monster is topped with M&M candies and the Naughty Boy Fudge Brownie also comes with whipped cream. The prices range from Bt100 to Bt140.
Among the refreshing smoothies on offer for Bt150 are a Purple Cow (strawberry, banana and vanilla ice cream) and the That’s Right Oreo (caramel, chocolate, vanilla ice cream and an Oreo cookie). You can also get a small bottle of fresh milk infused with chocolate, mint, bubblegum and vanilla flavours for Bt40.
Aromatic, strong Lavazza coffee with fruit and flower-scented teas are sold as well.
