The Silpakorn wind quintet return to the Siam Society

THE POPULAR Silpakorn Wind Quintet make a welcome return to the stage of the Siam Society next week, where they’ll be playing a programme of works by Jacques Ibert, Irving Fine and Ferenc Farkas.
The quintet, which is made up of leading woodwind players in Thailand and members of Silpakorn University’s music faculty, features Worapon Kanweerayothin on flute, Damrih Banawitayakit on oboe, Yos Vaneesorn on clarinet, Supreeti Ansvananda on horn and Kittima Molee on bassoon.
A wind quintet offers a variety of tones and timbres very different from those of a string quartet where all the instruments come from the same family. The acoustic combinations, which a wind quintet can produce, are limitless in that the individual sound characters are entirely preserved.
The evening gets underway with Ferenc Farkas’ Hungarian Dances, a piece that features an imitation of ancient Hungarian dance rhythms ranging from elegantly slow dances to joyful ones.
Jacques Ibert’s “Three Pieces Breves” consists of attractive melodies combined with a mixture of different compositional techniques borrowed from Debussy and Ravel as well as Stravinsky.
The recital will also feature the world premiere of “Aseana”, a newly written composition for woodwind quintet by oboe player Damrih, who is dean of Faculty of Music at Silpakorn University.
The concert closes out with Irving Fine’s Partita and Carl Nielsen’s Wind Quintet op 34.
