Success demands universal solidarity

As a participant in the recent Bangkok conference "Global Dialogue on Sustainable Development", I welcome the idea expressed by Dr Noeleen Heyzer, undersecretary-general of the UN and executive secretary of the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia a

She emphasised the necessity of embracing a spirit of human solidarity, shared responsibility and mutual benefit. This idea was also reflected in the Bangkok Declaration of the conference.
Sustainable development, solidarity and a strong sense of moral responsibility must be the guiding lights in national and international policy. Solidarity must be an important component of globalisation with a human face. Success in promoting sustainable development demands the full recognition of solidarity as a universal value.
