Eric Bahrt’s letter attacking fellow letter-writer JC Wilcox is completely ludicrous. Bahrt claims that moderate Muslims fail to condemn atrocities committed by Muslim extremists because of silence over atrocities committed against Muslims by Israel. Whose silence?
The global press, governments, UN agencies, rights groups and even Israeli and Jewish clerics and organisations have condemned Israeli policies, excess and atrocities.
Earlier this week the Israel-based newspaper Haaretz published a piece by Rabbi Daniel Landes calling on Israelis to repent for what occurred in Gaza. It was not the first article of its kind in that or other Israeli papers. Bahrt needs to remove his Israel-hating blinders.
Furthermore, if moderate Muslims truly care about the rights and lives of other Muslims, they would condemn atrocities no matter who commits them.
Muslims were slaughtering Muslims centuries before Israel existed. In the three years of conflict in Syria, Muslims have killed far more Muslims than all of those killed by Israel since 1948. As far as I can see, no Muslim leader has ever faced the International Criminal Court for atrocities committed against fellow Muslims. So Muslims are “getting away with it” too, not just Israel or the Buddhists of Myanmar and Sri Lanka. How come I never read any letters by Mr Bahrt expressing outrage over that, or over the fact that Hamas officials admitted using Gazan children as forced labour to build their tunnels, and that 160 of them died in the process?
Mr Bahrt wrote that “some of the things Islamic extremists do are absolutely barbaric and should be condemned”. Yet Mr Bahrt did not actually condemn them in his letter. Mr Bahrt is a bigoted hypocrite.
