ADIDAS ORIGINALS continues its series of street fashion collaborations with such big names as Jeremy Scott, Pharrell Williams, RUN DMC and the Farm Collection by teaming up with three style icons for its autumn and winter collection.
Tokyo-based designer and music producer Nigo found great inspiration from vintage wear, pop art, toys and street culture and reinterprets these elements into his designs for Adidas sportswear. Tagging along is Greek fashion designer Mary Katrantzou, aka the “Queen of Prints”, who offers a range of iconic deigns while the rebellious British singer Rita Ora shows fasionistas how to break the rules and get away with it.
True to his passion for classic and vintage clothing, Nigo has handpicked and re-interpreted pieces from the archives, blending a sportswear aesthetic with contemporary street style to create new street classics. The apparel collection features staples of American sportswear such as coach and varsity jackets, whilst the footwear offers unique interpretations of such popular silhouettes as the ZX 500 and Superstar 80.
Katrantzou meanwhile blends bold, often subversive graphics with architectural shapes and the latest technologies to convey a modern feminine aesthetic. Her vision is keenly translated, as she finds inspiration in the expansive Adidas archive of footwear. Track shoes worn by medal winners from the 1970s and 80s act as the starting point for a series of prints that re-contextualise the history of the brand’s iconography.
“When Adidas first approached me, I took time to think about what I could offer that’s different, what I could say through the collection that they haven’t said before,” Katrantzou says.
“Like many other kids around the world, I grew up wearing sneakers, and bringing my vision to such a global brand is a great challenge. They have a fantastic heritage and their ability to innovate in sportswear makes them the perfect partner for us to work with in this market. I believe prints and colours communicate perfectly to a wider audience.”
Micro becomes macro as Katrantzou turns these symbols on their head and introduces her own visual language defined by the outsoles, laces, and pop icons of the running shoe. She is looking forward to bringing a different product range to her audience and putting her own stamp on the legacy of Adidas Originals, as sportswear continues to define both the fashion and luxury markets.
“I wanted this collection to be more democratic because what I do every day is about luxury. It’s great to be able to translate my work into a product more people can enjoy,” Katrantzou says.
Recognised for her take on fashion as well as her musical collaborations, Ora is best known for her energy and spirit of originality.
“I worked very closely with the brand to put a personal touch in every piece with connections to my music, my career and my life,” she says.
“I'm really proud of the collection and beyond excited for my fans to get their hands on it!”
The Roses Pack showcases the beautiful chaos of nature with repeat rose prints blooming around an insect invasion in a burst of rich colour and vivid detail. A deep shade of midnight blue forms a fitting backdrop to the vibrant nature that unfolds across heritage track wear.
Loose boyfriend cuts in iconic sports fabrics contrast with the femininity of red flock prints in an outburst of natural mayhem as clusters of rose prints cover the collection from a cropped tee, a hat, heritage track wear and kicks, to an all-in-one sculpted bodysuit.
