Got a problem? Call in the Army

I have lost count of how many letters I and many others have written to The Nation over the years complaining about the pollution on Rayong's beaches, particularly Mae Ram Phueng.

At some stages the piles of rubbish and litter were so extensive that it was impossible to walk along the beach without tiptoeing through the filth.
All that has changed. The Army paid a visit and now the beach is spotless, even down to the fallen leaves of the casuarina pines that line the beach being swept up daily.
Locals and tourists have regained the pleasures of one of Thailand’s most beautiful and natural beaches. It is a particular joy to walk the beach in the cool of the early morning and watch the sunrise out to the east.
If it takes a bit of military discipline to fix the problems and ailments of this wonderful country, I am all for it.
