Majority is content with junta rule

Re: "Bravery, and a poke in the ribs", Letters, June 30.

Somsak Pola feels aggrieved that only 14 out of a population of 67 million Thais dare stand up for their rights. Has he considered that the remainder, or at least the majority of Thais, are quite happy with the status quo, or just don’t care, or are simply not interested in politics? As for me, and many others, we much prefer the situation now than the way it was before the coup. Exercising in Lumpini Park was almost impossible due to the anti-government mob camped everywhere, with the noise, filth and intimidating goons acting as security guards. This scene was repeated at numerous locations across the city, disrupting daily life for many residents.
I’m interested in just how Khun Somsak has been inconvenienced by the coup and Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha’s governance. And please don’t list ambiguous things like freedom of speech, lack of democracy, human rights, etc. I’d like details on how your daily life has been adversely affected.
Maybe you are a street vendor who has been told to clear out and make room for pedestrians, or a government official moved to a boring inactive post, or (heaven forbid), a member of a motorcycle gang arrested for racing on Bangkok streets?
As an alien, I’ve learned that obeying the law, keeping a low profile and having minimal contact with officialdom, especially the police, is the way to enjoy life in this wonderful country.
The coup has not upset me one bit and Prayut, who seems a decent man, can stay in charge as long as he can put up with the job.
As an aside, I’d like to thank the management and staff of Lumpini Park for restoring it to its former glory so quickly after the mob badly damaged the greenery.
Thais have a reputation for being among the best gardeners in the world and the expertise exhibited in rehabilitating this lovely oasis proved it!
Happy Alien
