Like so many others writing to newspapers since the release of the WHO document, David Brown and Robin Grant (November 6) make it clear that they have no intention of eliminating bacon or red meat from their diet.
But even if we choose to ignore the WHO health warnings, isn’t there another good reason to avoid meat? What about the enormous suffering our food choice inflicts on innocent animals?
The animals we so casually and callously transform into meat are not mindless blobs. They are intelligent, sensitive, life-loving individuals desiring to live every bit as much as we do. They also feel pain in the exactly the same way as us.
How would we like to be treated in the heartless and merciless manner that we treat them?
Since we know animal products are not necessary for good health, isn’t it selfish of us to deliberately cause them so much pain for something as frivolous as taste-bud pleasure?
