Film-maker Somboonsuk aka Peak Poster among eight named National Artists

Veteran movie poster artist-turned-filmmaker Somboonsuk Niyomsiri, aka Piak Poster, has been named a National Artist in the Culture Ministry’s awards for 2015.

Deputy Prime Minister General Tanasak Patimapragorn announced the award after a meeting of the National Culture Commission on Wednesday evening. 
The 83-year-old veteran director was appointed a National Artist in the field of performing arts (television and film art). He was among eight artists awarded the prestigious title this year. The two others in the field of performing arts were Wenika Boonnag (Thai traditional dance) and Santi Loonpae (international music).
Renowned non-fiction writer Theeraparb Lohitkun and SEA Write poet Paiwarin Khao-Ngam were honoured as National Artists in the field of literature.
The three awardees in the field of visual arts are architect Kritsada Rojanakorn, sculptor Wichai Sitthirat and industrial designer Sermsak Narkbua. 
National artists receive a monthly salary of Bt20,000 and a healthcare allowance of up to Bt100,000 for the rest of their lives.
The new national artists will receive shields and pins from a representative of HM the King at the National Cultural Centre on National Artist Day, February 24, next year.
