But there remain problems that the prime minister must tackle before he steps down from power:
First, reconciliation cannot be achieved in the short time available to his, but the two opposing political groups can be convinced to take a step back so as to allow a return to democratic rule via an election as originally scheduled.
Second, the government’s move to clamp down on the media is inadvisable. Who is better equipped than the media to help the authorities guide the country back to democracy and then make a dignified exit?
Third, most of us had hoped the junta would reform the police force and the education system, as well as tackling deep-rooted corruption. Those hopes are fading fast. The Prayut government should do its utmost to revive and achieve those objectives in its remaining time in office.
Our premier has all the power to make changes for the country’s betterment. Why not do it?
