The scenes of Russian and English fans brawling in the French city of Marseille and the ensuing violence at the Euro 2016 football championships are disgusting and a disgrace to sport. Is this what should go on at a spectacular sporting event?
When the French Interior Ministry classifies in advance a game such as the England versus Russia match “at risk” and police send in reinforcements to control violence among the fans, it is no longer football that we expect to see but the shameful spectacle of fans brawling. Uefa and national authorities everywhere must impose strict sanctions and exemplary penalties.
