Textured Dulux paints in just the right hue do far more than please the eye

YOU CAN put your personal stamp on a room in choosing the furniture – or changing the colour scheme. AkzoNobel, the firm that makes Dulux Paints, has created Dulux Ambiance with that in mind.
The special-effects wall paints – Linen, Marble, Metallic and Velvet – form interesting textures with which homeowners and anyone else with a building at their disposal can express their own character without a lot of fuss or expense. All of these effects not only look authentic, but they also have a unique feel to them.
When interior designer Kalaya Kovidvisith co-founded FabCafe Bangkok on Soi Aree, a classic wooden home transformed into a coffee shop, she had a clear objective in mind. She wanted it to be a creative space where young designers could work on projects together. Painting just one wall of the main common room Metallic Copper Sunset instantly brought it to life.
“We wanted the space to inspire new ideas and help the creative process,” Kalaya says. “Colour is a very important communicator, so we introduced this contemporary element into our interior. The metallic shade reflects our cafe’s character while at the same time giving it a warm feeling.”
At the Moo Bar, a restaurant in the same neighbourhood serving “modern Thai” food, the second floor underwent a dramatic transformation when the white walls got a coat of Marble Pebble. They suddenly looked stylish and better suited the furniture and picture frames.
“It was a matter of creating texture and giving dimension to the walls to establish a new overall interior environment, and the marbling effect works well with our decor and furniture,” says owner Kalayada Lohacharoenvanich, who’s also an interior designer by profession.
Velvet brings a decidedly luxurious touch to any room. The Prasarnmit branch of the restaurant Khua Kling Pak Sod has a posh style that’s aided and abetted by Gold Treasure Velvet walls on the ground floor and Velvet Gold Amber on the first.
They sparkle beautifully under the lights, giving the rooms an extra “wow” factor and setting off the vintage furniture, which returns the favour. Vases of flowers and candles in holders further lighten the overall tone to create a truly welcoming environment.
Homeowners can make equally good use of Dulux Ambiance. To give a room a natural feel, the Linen effect goes exceptionally well |with lighter-tone wooden furniture. Anyone wanting to check out the results need only visit the Japanese restaurant Bonsai on Soi Thonglor, where Linen in a grey tone has been applied to accentuate the interior’s gentle ambience (to use the Anglicised spelling of the French word).
