Apparently the finer points in my earlier letter were beyond Eric Bahrt’s comprehension.
First, Khun Abhisit Vejjajiva announced the rejection without indicating it was only his personal opinion and not that of his party. The Democrat Party he leads is the country’s oldest and most respected. It was unfair of him to not distinguish between his personal and official capacities. The party gave its members no direction on how to vote.
Second, ethically, matters of this nature (abolition of the death penalty is another) must be weighed according to each individual’s conscience.
Third, the opinions of General Prayut Chan-o-cha or Khun Yingluck Shinawatra or even that lonely man in Dubai can’t sway other people in their conscience because they are obviously not neutral, but rather are speaking out of self-interest.
