Talking Trump and Brexit

Speaking yesterday at Thammasat University with some Thai students in the process of applying for places in British universities, the conversation turned to the political situation in the EU and Brexit.

It then crossed the Atlantic to the race for the White House and the inevitable comments about Donald Trump. Trump is a liar, he’s a buffoon, he hates women. When faced with the question, why do you say that, the general response was, well it’s true isn’t it? When pressed further on the issue, asking their source of information, the names CNN, The Guardian and the BBC were put forward. They are all left-wing mainstream media propaganda channels for globalism.
There was a lack of understanding of why the UK is resigning membership of the EU; “Surely the UK is quite small alone. It would be stronger together with all the other countries in Europe”. When reminded that Thailand has a similar landmass and population as the UK, and would they be happy for their country to be governed by a bureaucracy in Singapore or even Manila, they were all aghast. “So now you understand why the UK voted for Brexit.”
It was made clear to them that the secret to studying is assimilating and processing broad research and applying common sense reasoning. Their theses or dissertations would be worthless without this.  Studying is not about receiving information but questioning, assimilating. Absorbing information academically simply for reproduction in exams does not build the intellect – thinking does that.
