Donald Trump’s recent allegation that his opponents are using Nazi tactics to try compromise him has a grain of truth.
Third Reich propaganda did seek to demonise Winston Churchill as a lazy, brandy-swilling alcoholic, while US President Franklin Roosevelt was derided as a homosexual surrounded by “Jewish scum”.
Of course, the allies fired back. Hitler’s allegedly deficient genitalia were a persistent theme.
All this nonsense had only short-term effects. Civilians on all sides, then and now, eventually learn to discount the shouting and screaming. Trump already has the least-favourable polling results of any US president-elect. As he blunders his way into 2017 with a mouth that seldom closes except to eat, expect public disillusionment to explode. Hopefully not literally!
