THE WINNERS of the third edition of Cat Radio’s popular short film contest “Ao Pleng Ma Tham Pen Nang” (“A Song is Turned into a Short Film”) were announced recently at a event held at the Emporium’s Emprive Cinecub with the first prize going jointly to Atthawut Inthakul for his “Chan Bar Chan Fun” and Rathakhet Khunsit for “ICU”.
“Both shorts have a lot of merit,” noted jury member Khomsan Nanthajit. ‘Chan Bar Chan Fun’ is different from the other films as it focuses on the life of a worker from Myanmar. I found it very touching. ‘ICU’ is also excellent.”
“’I like the way ‘Chan Bar Chan Fun’ tells the story of migrant workers from Myanmar by using a daughter talking with her mother on the phone. It’s a strong story that says a lot about society and immigrants. ‘ICU’ is a thriller that plays with the audience’s excitement levels. The idea is creative and the production skills merit mention too. Some of my fellow judges liked ‘Pla’, which ends with a dramatic death, but I personally found it hard to understand,” added movie critic Nara.
Khomsan was joined on stage by Patcha “DJ JuneJune” Poonpiriya to announce the winners of the Dode Deng Awards worth Bt3,000 a pop.
“All the judges were on the same page in choosing ‘Loke Yang Mai Taek’ by Sangsan SaeJew for getting the most out of a restroom, ‘Pla’ by Methee Samarnthong for its story of loneliness and ‘Phop Kan Mai’ by Nathapol Suwansura for its compilation of great footage, including the exciting scene of the space shuttle launch,” said Khomsan.
Pop rock band 25 Hours, whose 22 songs were among the numbers chosen for the 338 short films, appeared on stage to announce the Popular Vote, which went to “Yip Ham Pen Paen Thi Hok” by Thipaphol Puangmaha along with a Bt10,000 cash prize.
“It is a nice short film with a twist in the end,” said Khomsan.
Distinguished actor Krung Srivilai, who has acted in more than 400 movies and 60 TV dramas, came up to the stage to announce “Yin Dee Thi Dai Phop Ther” by Puripat Pruekamnuay as the winner of the Choice Award and its Bt15,000 prize.
Actresses Kemisara “Belle” Paladesh and Pavadee “Cook” Komchokpaisan, who starred in music video of Stamp’s song “Nak Leng Keyboard”, were in charge of announcing the third runner up – Nanthawut Puphasuk’s “Nak Leng Keyboard”.
Actress Violette Wautier and Cat Radio’s Pongnarin “Jong” Ulice handed the winning awards to Atthawut and Rathakhet, with Pongsarin taking the opportunity to thank all the contestants who had submitted short films.
Khomsan was full of praise for the entries. “The process for making a film as well as the equipment and techniques are very different from when I was a student. Many of them were quite professional,” he commented.
“The way of writing a short film script along with the shooting, editing and production is far more developed than 10 years ago. I’m proud of our young filmmakers,” Nara added.
