Why firing of FBI chief could be Trump’s biggest mistake

Re: “Donald Trump planned firing James Comey before aide’s letters”, Wall Street Journal, May 12.

Flouting an unwritten rule of office, President Donald Trump fired his FBI chief on Tuesday. He then compounded what seems his biggest mistake in office so far by unwittingly declaring the action was taken on personal rather than constitutional grounds.
“Regardless of recommendations, I was going to fire Comey,” Trump told NBC on Thursday.
This contradicted an earlier White House statement, that the action was the result of recommendations by the attorney-general and his deputy – both of whom are Trump appointees – for Comey’s dismissal.
According to reports, Comey has since disclosed he was summoned to the White House for a one-on-one dinner just seven days after Trump’s swearing-in and asked to pledge loyalty to the new president. Comey demurred, offering instead to serve with “honesty”.
President Trump may have just landed himself in the hot seat with a rash and self-serving action.
