Before the talkies

The 4th Silent Film Festival returns to the Scala and Lido theatres in Siam Square from June 8 to 14, opening with the newly restored Fritz Lang movie “Destiny” (1921).

The classic silent movies from all over the world will be shown to live musical accompaniment by musicians from Japan, England and Thailand.

This year, the festival is marking the centenary of Germany’s leading UEFA studio with a special programme that includes “Destiny” and an exhibition by UEFA at the Scala Hall. The 130th anniversary of Thailand-Japan diplomatic relations is also being celebrated with the silent film “Chusingura” (1928) narrated by professional benshi (traditional Japanese narration) Ichiro Kataoka. He will also narrate the short film “Our Pet” (1924) and Harold Lloyd’s silent movie “The Freshman”. Other movies showing at the festival include “The Mask of Zorro” (1920) starring Douglas Fairbanks and “Arsenal” (1929)  from Ukrainian director Alexander Dovzhenko , “Underground” (1928) from the UK director Anthony Asquith and “The Informer”(1929) – the latest silent film to have been restored by the British Film Institute.
