I would like to clarify a few points regarding your front-page report:
Firstly, providing protection and assistance to all Thai nationals in distress, including victims of human trafficking networks, as depicted through the Minnesota case referred to in the article, remains the primary mission of the Royal Thai Embassy in Washington DC and all Royal Thai Consulates-General in the United States. The Thai missions have been cooperating continuously with several relevant United States authorities and civil society, both at the federal and local levels, as well as a number of Thai organisations in the US.
Secondly, apart from providing assistance to Thai nationals in the US, including legal assistance, our Embassy and Consulates-General have been coordinating with the Thai and American law enforcement agencies to ensure speedy and appropriate assistance to Thai nationals.
Thirdly, our Consulate-General in Los Angeles has been working closely with the Thai Community Development Centre (Thai CDC) on issues concerning community development and Thai Town. We have also learned that the Thai CDC is working to combat human trafficking where coordination on such sensitive issues requires the need to respect the rights to privacy, safety and preferences on modes of assistance of the victims, as stipulated in US law.
Fourthly, our Embassy and all Consulates-General in the United States stand ready to work with US officials and concerned organisations in combating human trafficking in accordance with relevant Thai and US laws and regulations. Emergency hotlines open 24 hours have also been provided for Thai nationals. In this regard, we are willing to work with relevant stakeholders in exchanging views and finding practical recommendations in order to reach and enhance our assistance to all Thais.
I hope this letter gives your readers a more accurate perception of the efforts of the Thai missions abroad and their continuous cooperation with all relevant stakeholders, with the ultimate aim of providing protection and assistance to all Thais in need.
