Bookshops prospering amid Trump’s unprecedented hiring-and-firing policy

Monday brought us a thoughtful contribution on the Comey-Trump imbroglio.

The writer, Steve K, described himself as a retired “American patriot”. I have no issue with this, as I happen to believe it is not a crime to love your country. This is especially true when one is lucky to have been born in a democracy, as he and I were. This is all the more pertinent, as I had the privilege of serving alongside our American allies in Germany in the 1970s, an historical duty that goes back to the end of World War II and of course even earlier and even after that, when we shed blood together to defend what we commonly believe in. This extends to respect for a Muslim-American Gold Star family who lost their son in combat, giving up his life in the service of his country. I find that anyone who insults these grieving patriots is a particularly odious apology for a human being.
Now, Steve has a jaundiced view of James Comey, that much is evident; moreover, and unlike some who visit here, he writes with authority and gravitas. As such, I can only assume that former FBI director Comey has indeed got things to answer for. I base this on the axiom that none of us are perfect, and that we might wish to have done things differently, with the benefit of hindsight. In that context, he (Comey) may well be liable.
That said, and with due regard to the outcome of the 2016 election, Steve K stated in his missive that Comey was “fired for a reason”; true. I further note that the sheer torrent of “outgoings” of personnel summarily ejected from the Trump administration might also constitute “sackings/firings”. I have no doubt that there were “reasons” for these, too. A pattern can now be established, can it not? Readers should be left to make up their own minds on this.
I go to the excellent Kinokuniya bookstore in Siam Paragon to buy my UK newspaper, and to browse the new publications. Alongside Comey’s tome there are a number of other, Trump-related publications for sale. Check ’em out if you’re in the vicinity; a veritable cottage industry is emerging.
