South Africa, here we come!

Since winemaker Mont Clair is offering a Bt250,000 package tour for free, why not?

South African Ambassador Douglas Gibson is probably telling the truth when he touts his countrymen's "warmth and humanity" and, given the scenery and wildlife there, no one's going to argue with his claim of "a massive wealth of things to do".

Still, seeing is believing, so enter the "Win a Trip to South Africa" draw hosted by Siam Winery and Thai Airways and you might get to test his words.

Siam Winery imports Mont Clair products from South Africa, and together with the national airline they unveiled the contest recently at the Swissotel Nai Lert Park.

Grace Mahadumrongkul was at the unveiling to attest that she needs no further convincing about South Africa's appeal. She's visited several times.

"Going on safari is one of the most memorable experiences of my life. I saw 'the big five' close up - lions, leopards, rhinos, elephants and Cape buffalo."

South African wines are referred to as "New World wine", but the region has cultivated grapes for wine for more than 350 years, dating back to the early Dutch colonial era.

Cape Town, founded by the Dutch, has become the capital of the South African wine industry.

Its wines are relative newcomers on the Thai market, having been preceded by vintages from Australia, Argentina and Chile, but their quality and attractive price have guaranteed success here.

"We hope Thai wine fans and anyone else who'd like to learn more about wine will take this opportunity to travel to South Africa for great wine-tasting experiences and enjoy the wonderful scenery," Ambassador Gibson said.

"There's no visa requirement for stays of 30 days or less, and the direct flight is only 11 hours.

"The Western Cape, our wine province, has a very laid-back, welcoming attitude, vibrant nightlife and beautiful beaches."

Kim Wachtveitl and Daniel Schwalb of Siam Winery explained that three entries will be chosen in the draw, each winning a Bt250,000 package tour for two people.

The six winners will be flown in February to South Africa and be shown around by Mont Clair. They'll see the wilderness, Sun City, Johannesburg, Cape Town and the vineyards of the Breede River Valley. All food and accommodation are covered.

To enter, register at www.MontClair-Trip.com between October 1 and December 31. The winners' names will be announced on January 20.
