With headlines questioning nuclear pros and cons, accompanied by the global ramifications of potential radioactivity leaks, isn’t it high time to re-open public debate concerning Israel’s secretive nuclear [capacity]? Whereas the US advocates sanctions against Iran to curb its nuclear ambitions, Israel’s “top secret” prolific armament goes unchallenged. Informed statisticians estimate that Israel possesses up to 400 nuclear weapons, including thermonuclear weapons, as well as a massive chemical and biological weapons arsenal.
Under the auspices of a newly configured United Nations infrastructure, concerned people must demand clarifications and honest answers as a prerequisite for independent Palestinian statehood negotiations. Fair-minded people must together seek an equitable compromise which ensures that the people of Palestine are entitled to exercise their just cause: self-determination in their own homeland, living within secure, internationally-recognised frontiers, with East Jerusalem as their capital.
Hopefully, Israel ’s progressive majority that desires peace and democracy rather than war and theocracy, will prevail to break the fundamentalists’ self-destructive stranglehold, ushering in an era of peaceful coexistence and enduring stability for the entire region.
