Where are the closest regions to Bangkok that are not flood-prone? Wherever those properties are, is where all movable functions of Bangkok should be relocated. Government services, temples, universities, residences, airports etcetera should all consider moving to higher ground. Subsequent floods will be worse than this one. This year, the suggested amount of aid is Bt100 billion (much of which goes into politicians’ pockets). Subsequent years: Bt200 billion, Bt400 billion, Bt1 trillion?
What will be the next bright idea from the science minister (who knows less about science than the average Scandinavian third-grader)? After 1,000 boats revving their engines and achieving nothing except a cloud of smog and added revenue for riverside petrol sellers, perhaps he’ll suggest injecting tonnes of silicon gel into the sinking mud flats which support what remains of Bangkok.
