Green giveaway day the answer for the US

Re. "Symbols scary for some in the US", August 13.

For once Guy Baker gives me a little support in my efforts to find a way through the inherent problems, political and social, that so bedevil human communities all over the world. And I love the image of the black letters on the white pages of great books.
Indeed, I don’t think any colour would have the symbolic effect for Americans that red, white and blue do already, with the possible exception of black. But if every American gave a small slip of green paper, and just a tiny $1 note would do, to everybody they met at a designated hour one special day, that might really make a difference. Because just imagine what it would mean if every American were willing to participate in a colour-coded act of surrender? It would mean every citizen endorsed the cardinal importance of charity, sharing, altruism and trust in others that ought to inform all American policy. Every citizen could demonstrate in public the belief that, given the chance, every American will certainly do better, and more often than not, his or her best. And everybody would benefit from that.
You can’t fault Americans for not trying hard enough, except for not giving up a little instead of constantly taking!
Most Americans have no idea how extravagantly blessed they are with resources, space and opportunity. Nor to they see what a shocker it is that, despite all that wealth, so many American parents have no hope for their children, are afraid of the damage that doctors, lawyers and college professors will do to their futures, and can’t even be sure they’ll have enough food to put on the table for their children at night.
A public green give-away day could kick-start a new colour campaign in America, and thereafter everybody could pin a greenback to his or her breast, signifying not more but less. Some wouldn’t, but they’d certainly be exposed by their greed!
