After showing in Chiang Mai last month, “The Spirit of Budo” moves to Bangkok, opening on Saturday at the G23 Art Gallery on Sukhumvit Soi 23.
The first half of the exhibition, which explores the history of the martial arts in Japan, is a display of reproductions of historical weapons and implements, and includes eight superbly designed helmets from the Warring States period of 1467 to 1568.
The second half focuses on the contemporary practice of the martial arts and features bamboo swords, protectors, gloves, and Hakama pants.
Admission is free. It runs until September 27. Call (02) 649 5000 extension 5005.
Cardin’s Venetian mushroom
French fashion designer Pierre Cardin has designed a gift meant as an economic catalyst to Venice and the region: a 250-metre-tall modernist glass skyscraper housing a fashion university, luxury hotel suites and shops.
But rather than unbridled enthusiasm, the proposed 2.4-billion euro (Bt9.4 trillion) project has been met with everything from healthy scepticism to open ridicule.
The “Palace of Light” has been described alternatively as a spaceship that crashed into the lagoon, a shiny fishing lure or an illuminated mushroom.
Cardin defended himself against the criticism from local conservationists saying that the tower “will not be visible from Venice”.
Night out with Antonia
Marc Jacobs’ autumn collection of handbag ranges from stylish leather satchels and crocodile-and-snake embossed shoulder bags to metallic cosmetic pouches and iPad cases.
The hottest bag on the runway this season – and the designer’s personal favourite – is “Antonia”, which fuses chic with functional and boasts a large front zip pocket deep enough to carry a host of necessities, a shoulder strap that can be removed and leather side gussets that protect the wearer’s belongings from spilling out.
Antonia is available in black, ochre, red, white and also comes in a smaller size called “small Antonia”.
