Some ideas on how to boost children's interest in science

Ref: "Call for overhaul of science, maths", National, August 28.

Readers think that if children are interested in science and love it, would the country suffer a decline in science results locally and internationally for many years? I think readers will agree that results are often reverse to good performances.
I would like to suggest examples to keep children interested in science and loving it.
1. Try to take kids to see the science museum in Pathum Thani province. They will marvel when they see the tilted building standing; the inside consists of six floors showing scientific learning resources. It will make them question how can it stand while tilted. For children in the provinces, scientific learning resources are natural or artificial; both in and out of schools that can attract their attention.
2. Tell the history of world-class scientists such as Thomas Edison, who invented an electric light bulb, testing up to 700 times before having success. But he did not think the 700 times were failures; he considered them lessons – mistakes he wouldn’t make again. It shows his positive thinking and the patience of a world-class scientist.
3. Create a stimulating learning environment around children via questioning ‘why?’ and ‘how?’.
4. People at both home and in schools should encourage kids to have fun experimenting, and finding knowledge while also considering safety.
5. Give a moral boost for children when their experiments fail and give praise when their experiments succeeded.
These are examples of how to avoid children having to do learning by rote. They will get expression, comprehension, thinking skills and be able to solve problems in the real world. Finally, the quality of science education will be enhanced and useful for kids due to the fact they like learning science.
