But he’s been in love all his life with the woman he met on his first date. He ought to be producing a wonderful romance novel any day now.
Australian Natalie Schneider came to Thailand in 1996, initially for a year’s work experience, but she met Gahn and they fell in love. Since he’d never earn much writing in his own language in Australia, they remained here.
The two met casually on several occasions through her housemate, and then one night Natalie ventured alone to the bar near the Victory Monument that Gahn part-owned. After a few drinks he asked her out. That was 15 years ago and they’ve never been apart since.
Every night when Gahn is working on a novel, he reads his day’s work to Natalie when they go to bed, translating the words into English for her. She knows all his characters well, often falling asleep in the midst of their adventures, the “dark dystopia whirling through my head”, as she puts it, laughing. “It’s surprising I sleep at all!”
Gypso gets the go
Channel 5’s “Saranae” has replaced founding co-host Nakorn “Ple” Silachai with actress Ramita “Gypso” Mahapreukponga, giving the jocular decade-old show its first female host to play off Willy McIntosh and Kiatisak “Hoi” Udomnak.
“At first I just thought they wanted me to be a guest again,” says Gypso. “When they said they wanted me to co-host I got really excited.”
She says it will be a challenge since the only TV hosting she’s done has been on trendy teenagers’ shows. She only hopes she doesn’t laugh too much on “Saranae”. Willy and Hoi have told her just to relax while she’s learning their tricks of the trade.
Upon hearing who’s replaced him following his abrupt departure, Ple jokes that “she’s more beautiful”, but he reckons they’ve made the right choice because Gypso is talented and charismatic.
