Why tea deserves a boutique

Bangkok’s tea lovers are among the first to enjoy Twinings teas and nibbles at Twinings Tea Boutique, opened just a few weeks ago at Zen. 

Three hundred years of history and expertise about the world’s best-known English tea can now be enjoyed in a relaxing setting, with a vast selection of standard and speciality blends and an array of savoury and sweet snacks.

If the only blends you’ve ever tried are Breakfast and Earl Grey, you’re in for an extravagant treat at this boutique, where they have an unimaginably vast selection of teas to choose from, something to suit everyone’s palate. You have the limited edition blends such as Diamond Jubilee, Lavender Earl Grey, Mulled Spice and the Christmas tea collections, as well as Twinings’ rare and delectable limited harvest blends. 

Recommended is the Special Mudan. Herbaceous and slightly toasted, the combination of black and green tea from Anhui in China is harvested only once a year and hand-tied into a small peony-like globe, allowing the flavours to blossom slowly in the pot. Another tea not to be missed is Fairy Ladies Golden Rings, which is a smooth yet identifiable green tea from Fujian. 

Other special blends include Ceylon Silver Tips, handmade green tea Pearl Over Oyster, and of course, the brand’s authentic creations, Earl Grey and Lady Grey.

The hot teas come in a small pot for two from Bt140 and big pot for four from Bt240. Iced teas can be had too, in one size, from Bt150. Recommended is the sweet and addictive Portobello Passion, a fruity combo of mango and orange. 

Feeling hungry? The boutique serves savoury nibbles like quiche, croissants, salad and sandwiches, as well as sweets such as tea macaroons, British scones and pastries. A small afternoon tea set with a pot and nibbles starts at Bt450. If you come in a group of three or four, a big set can be had from Bt850.

There is a tea master who can recommend the tea to suit your mood and style, as well as churn out “bespoke” tea to your unique preference at Bt700 per 100 grams, with one complimentary big pot of the blend to enjoy at the boutique. It takes less than 20 minutes, and you’ll be walking away with a tea to call your own.
